How Wool is Made
If you want to know how wool is made from getting it from the sheep to making a woolly jumper then the following children's programme made by ComeOutside TV for CBeebies which is the BBC's children's channel has all the facts.
A popular way of trying to get to sleep is to imagine sheep jumping over a fence one by one and counting them until you fall asleep from boredom. There are more successful ways of falling asleep but you press the link below to go to a game to give it a try.
Here are some facts about sheep and wool. Did you know that
Female sheep are called Ewes, males are rams and the young are called lambs.
The softest wool comes from lambs rather than sheep. Other animals who produce wool are goats, rabbits, alpacas and vicunas.
Sheep's wool is mainly white but can also be black or brown, but in ancient mythology there was even the search for the golden fleece!
Sheep have a field of vision of around 300 degrees, allowing them to see behind themselves.
China and Australia have the most sheep.
Although sheep are mainly farmed for their meat and wool they have many other uses as they can also be used to produce paper, cosmetics, candles and dice. Sheep are also a lot cheaper to look after compared to many other farm animals. Some farmers even rent out their flocks of sheep as a mowing service to keep unwanted vegetation down in unwanted spaces.
Sheep like to keep together in a flock this makes it easier to move them together (herd) from field to field to find fresh grass. This is called shepherding which is one of the oldest occupations, beginning some 5,000 years ago.
Baa Baa Black Sheep is an old English nursery rhyme which has been around since at least 1731. During that time it's words have hardly changed although its original meaning has been lost in time.
